Entrance Exam for the Department of Wind and Percussion Instruments

The entrance exam for applicants to the Department of Wind and Percussion Instruments consists of the following sections: performance program, colloquium, solfeggio (written and oral), harmony (written and oral).


PROGRAM PERFORMANCE

The applicant must perform:

  1. Scales (up to 7 accidentals), arpeggios, inversions of D7, Um7 in all articulations.

  2. Etudes.

  3. Pieces.

  4. A large-form sonata or a concerto (1st movement or II–III movements).


COLLOQUIUM

The colloquium reveals the applicant’s cultural level, their aesthetic views, erudition in the field of musical art, knowledge of the main stages and patterns in the history of music, knowledge of literature in their specialty, musical terminology, sight-reading skills, and understanding of the content, form, and stylistic features of the performed works.


Entrance Requirements for Music-Theoretical Disciplines

Solfeggio (oral):

  • Singing scales in keys with 1 to 5 accidentals: two types of major and three types of minor, all types of triads with inversions and resolutions, as well as harmonic progressions including up to six chords;

  • Sight-singing a monophonic melody in major or minor with chromatic (altered) degrees, possible modulations to related keys, in simple meters, with various rhythmic difficulties.

Harmony (oral):

  • Performing tasks at the piano: playing modulations to closely related keys in the form of a period (the applicant may be given an initial harmonic progression); playing tonal and modulating sequences (2–4 chords in a segment);

  • Harmonic analysis at sight of works in various styles. The character of the harmonic language should not exceed the following level of complexity: L. Beethoven — sonatas; P.I. Tchaikovsky — “The Seasons”; M.I. Glinka, P.I. Tchaikovsky, S.V. Rachmaninoff;

  • Answering questions on the course of harmony as may be related to the assignments above.

The history of the department dates back to the founding of the Conservatory. During this period, outstanding musicians worked at the department: Z. M. Mambetaliev — Professor, Honored Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic; K. A. Aitygulov — Professor, People’s Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic; A. K. Kurbanaliev — Professor, Honored Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic. The department has graduated more than two hundred certified musicians and teachers who work in symphony, wind, and military orchestras both in the republic and abroad.

Today, the Department of Wind and Percussion Instruments is a “forge” for talented young people passionate about music. It is this passion that is the defining quality during the annual selection of a new generation. Knowledge of music makes their lives meaningful, fulfilling, and interesting, and whatever they may become in the future, the love of music acquired within the walls of the conservatory will stay with them forever.
